anonymouscuban > Day #39 - Bubba's 13th Birthday

Today is our Bubba's 13th birthday. Bubba joined our family when he was 8 weeks old; he was so small he fit in the palm of my hand. Since then, he has grown to become part of our family. He is the most gentle dog I have ever owned. He has never shown an ounce of aggression towards anyone or anything. He is truly a gentle soul.

Bubba is not the average dog. I don't even think he sees himself as a dog. We have 3 other pooches and aside from cuddling up to them for warmth at night when they sleep, he wants nothing to do with them. When he comes across other dogs on walks or outings, he may give the other dog a courtesy sniff so as not to come off like a snob, but that is pretty much it.

He's a good companion too. He rarely barks other than when he wants you to carry him up or down the stairs because he doesn't feel up to doing it himself. He doesn't stray; you can leave him outside and he doesn't leave the cul-de-sac. He wants nothing more than to keep you company. He will lay on your lap for hours and keep you nice a warm. He's the perfect pet really.

Despite his old age, he still gets around pretty well but his age is starting to show. His muzzle, once black, is now almost completely gray. He's not the best smelling dog despite being indoors all the time. He is completely deaf now, although for some reason, he can hear the microwave beep when it's done cooking. His eye sight is not the best and he sometimes bumps into things. It's actually kind of endearing. Yes, he is an old guy, but we love him more than ever. I hope he lives to see at least a few more birthdays because life without him will not be the same.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUBBARONI!
anonymouscuban > Day #38 - A Whale of a Tail

WOW! Been a while since I posted a new daily photo. Just so busy lately I haven't had time. I took this yesterday during a whale watching trip off the coast of the Channel Islands, which are just west of Ventura California.

We saw about 5 different humpback whales during the trip. I was amazed by how close we were able to get and the size of these creatures. Really makes you feel small. There were also hundreds of dolphins. I surf and routinely see dolphins but never so many. Great trip.
anonymouscuban > Day #37 - Chinese Garden

This is the newly opened Chinese Garden at the Huntington Library in Pasadena, CA. It was quite beautiful.
anonymouscuban > Day #36 - Say Cheese!

Gator giving me the stink eye. These guys know they are top dogs. You can tell by the way they just lie there, without a care in the world. I think he was hoping I'd get in a bit closer.
anonymouscuban > Day #35 - Doctor, do you think Botox can help?

This gals wrinkles and texture in her skin were amazingly beautiful. Not the most captivating composition but I really love the contrast and details in this capture. I had to do some post work on this image because it was a very ugly and overcast day out which made for some rather flat images. This is a perfect example of how shooting in RAW format is an easy yet effective tool in digital photography.
anonymouscuban > Day #34 - Santa Clara Mission

This is one of the courtyards at the Santa Clara Mission. This mission is very well maintain and is on the campus of the University of Santa Clara.

My wife is in this picture, but you have to look very closely to find her. I actually did not see her until several days after I took this picture.
anonymouscuban > Day #33 - Bell Tower, Mission San Miguel Arcangel

This is the bell tower the stands in front of walls of the old historic mission in San Miguel, CA. This is one of 7 California Missions my wife and I have visited. There are 21 in all and we plan on seeing every one of them.

Unfortunately, this mission was closed to the public because it suffered quite a bit of damage during an earthquake in 2003. We did read that they have started renovating it and hope to reopen it once again in the near future. We were disappointed because it looked quite amazing from the outside.
anonymouscuban > Day #32 - Monarch

This is a shot I took while up in Santa Cruz, CA. During the winter you can find millions of these butterflies resting in the eucalyptus trees along the central and northern coast of California before they continue their migration north. They usually clump very high up on the trees but this guy stop down low just long enough for me to snap this shot.
anonymouscuban > Day #31 - Gotham City

Actually, Pasadena City Hall. I took this shot about 45 minutes after sunset. I could not believe how blue the sky was. It served as a perfect back drop for this beautiful building. This is actually taken from the inside courtyard. The front is also pretty but this perspective is my favorite.

I exposed for the sky on this shot to capture the bright blue. It was a 20 sec exposure at f/16. I shot it at 11mm focal length using my Tokina 11-16mm lens and my Nikon D300. This is pretty much straight out of camera, all I did was crop the image a little bit.

BTW, I think that is Venus in the top left corner of the image.
anonymouscuban > Day #30 - My... what big teeth you have Grandma!

The business end of a gator. I took a few other shots of this guy, or gal... didn't get close enough to figure that part out... but this is my favorite of the series.
anonymouscuban > Day #29 - Basking in the Sun

This little meerkat was really enjoying the sun. It had been raining earlier that day so I think he was happy to see the sun break through the clouds.
anonymouscuban > Day #28 - Santa Barbara Mission

This is the back of the church at the Old Santa Barbara Mission. It was quite dark in the church and I did not have my tripod with me. I made the best of the shot by laying down flat on the ground and rested the camera on the church floor. Next time I will be sure to listen to my wife when she tells me I should bring my tripod. For some strange reason, she always right but even after 17 years of marriage, I still don't listen ;-)
anonymouscuban > Day #27 - Photoshop Fun

This is my nephew Devin. I was bored so I decided to goof around a bit with Photoshop and created this Out Of Border picture using a few layer masks, gradients and shading.
anonymouscuban > Day #26 - Meatball anyone?

You guys seemed to really enjoy my portrait of Potato that was yesterday's daily so I am obligated to post one of her brother Meatball. I'd hate for him to find out I am playing favorites ;-)

This is still a work in progress. I am happy with the B&W conversion but not too excited about the background replacement, especially around the edges. I will post the finish product once it's done but I really love this pic anyway. His expression is priceless... really looks like he is smiling, doesn't it?

More dog photos in the future as I have two more of them!
anonymouscuban > Day #25 - Slice of Potato

This is a shot I took of my 2 year old female pug "Potato". I entered this shot in the DSS 16 challenge, which I am currently one of the finalist.

I tried to make this a little different than the average dog portrait. I converted it to B&W but added a warming filter. I also used the severe left crop to really emphasize Potato's stare, something she does often; sits outside of reach and just stares attentively at you. I wanted this to be a fun picture and I really like the way this shot turned out. I plan on having it printed and matted to hang in my home.

BTW, we have four dogs. That's right four! Three pugs and an 80 lb female yellow lab.
